Smart Meters
With severe economic challenges ahead of us it pays to be smart.
Why are smart meters so important?
Many people are worried about the rising cost of energy and the rate of climate change. We are no longer an energy island and our supplies of North Sea oil and gas are depleting. We all need to think more about how much energy we use and the carbon we emit.
Energy suppliers are legally required to reduce the amount of carbon that they use. Smart meters will enable this to happen on a large scale and are the first step in any effective energy-saving programme is to either replace or upgrade your existing meters with smart metering technology.
Smart meters are the next generation of electricity and gas meters. A smart meter is a meter that helps with energy management and is easy to install, with small devices fitted alongside or in place of existing meters.
A Smart Meter is an innovative and advanced meter that will record your utility consumption in much greater detail than a conventional meter. It enables the recording of real-time energy use, which can be collected remotely and generally, sends that information via a network (e.g. SMS / GPRS / LPR / internet) back to your utility company for monitoring and billing purposes.
Why smart metering?
No more meter readings - the energy company receives your exact meter reading automatically.
Receive accurate bills - your bill is always based on the exact energy you use, not on an estimate.
Keep track of the energy you use - you can see your real-time utility consumption on any display device. You know how much you use and when.
Identify irregularities faster and therefore save time, money and energy.
Data analysis enables improved forecasting and budgeting
Compare the amount of electricity and gas you use today against what you used the day before, the week before, the month before and even the year before.
“Smart Meters are the new generation of gas and electricity meters
which have the potential to revolutionise the energy industry. I believe
they are absolutely essential if consumers are to be offered greater
control of their energy consumption.” Duncan Sedgwick, Chief Executive of the Energy Retail Association
According to research by the Institute of Directors – “Businesses addressing energy efficiency had reduced their bills by 6-10 % with some saving up to 20%....”
The Carbon Trust estimates “Businesses are wasting 7 million pounds a day on poor energy efficiency …”
Did You know… You are not obliged to pay a bill based on an estimated meter reading and you can insist on providing a ‘customer read’ for your supplier to reissue an accurate bill.
Sub-metering - Metering the total energy used at a site does not show how energy consumption is used across different areas of your business or for different pieces of equipment. Installing sub-metering to measure selected areas of energy use can give you a better understanding of where energy is used and where the biggest potential savings can be made.
TIP: Astralweb’s smart metering solution can be connected to a Building Management System using either cabled or wireless technology to measure energy use in relation to the information on building control and management.
